In front of her a man in a fine suit and top hat looks around the bar with a sense of importance — not that he thinks he’ll find anything of importance, but that he IS the most important thing in the room.

As he impatiently waits for a drink — his eyes betraying a burning and offended sense of entitlement — tiny, wretched creatures tug on the woman’s clothes. Miserable refuse, their hunger pangs wordlessly plead for sustenance. But, powerless, the woman can only respond to their cries, “You’ll have to ask your father.”
But the fine-dressed man has no interest in the dirty things struggling at his feet. Instead, his eyes lock enviously on the flashing billfold of another person down the way. In his mind, he turns and schemes how to somehow get his mark to give him everything they have, but somehow feel proud of making themselves destitute. Like it’s some noble or patriotic act.
Oh, he’ll say it’s for the “poor children” gathered around the same feet he regularly uses to kick them.

But in his mind, he can already taste the decadent meal it will feed him. He can feel the engine revving on the new toy he’ll be able to tuck away with the others because of it. He holds that power of having excess in his hands.
His heart races at the idea of watching the already immense total of his bank account grow even more ludicrous. Value, he tells himself, it means I have great value.
He’s too important to have other people’s woes tie him down.
But, he’s not a monster.
He’ll leave the mini, muddy humans nipping at his heels some scraps.
After all, they’re still useful.
